English Country Dances

Ignatius Sancho (c. 1729–1780) was a pioneering British composer, writer, and abolitionist whose extraordinary life left an indelible mark on 18th-century London culture. Born on a transatlantic slave ship, Sancho was brought to England as an orphaned toddler. Through his immense intellect and determination, and with the support of the Duke of Montagu, who granted him access to his extensive library, Sancho educated himself in literature, social theory, and music.

After gaining his freedom, Sancho became a successful shopkeeper in Westminster, a celebrated man of letters, and the first person of African descent known to have voted in a British parliamentary election. An accomplished self-taught composer, he published four collections of vocal and instrumental works during his lifetime. His Twelve Country Dances for the Year 1779 highlights his talent for catchy, elegant melodies designed for popular social gatherings of the Georgian era. Sancho's legacy endures not only as a composer of charm and craftsmanship, but as a vital historic voice for human rights and equality.

English Country Dances brings four gems from Sancho’s 1779 collection to life for young string ensembles:

1. Strawberries and Cream: A bright, cheerful introduction featuring crisp bowing and lively, step-wise melodic trades between sections. 

2. Culford Heath Camp: A lyrical, graceful change of pace in 3/4 time, giving students an opportunity to focus on bow control, smooth slurs, and sustained phrase shaping.  

3. Llandrindod Lasses: A fast-paced, high-energy dance that challenges the ensemble with driving, running eighth notes and sharp rhythmic precision.  

4. Trip to Dillington: A spirited finale that maintains the brisk pace, utilizing motoric patterns and dynamic contrasts to conclude the suite.
