Lone Eagle was composed for the Central Minnesota Youth Orchestra. Inspired by the daring pioneers of early aviation, it serves as a musical tribute to the adventurous spirit of the "barnstormers" and Central Minnesota’s own Charles Lindbergh. The work captures the thrill of early flight, characterized by its constant kinetic motion and lyrical, soaring themes that weave dynamically through the ensemble to suggest the fluid grace and turbulence of the open sky.
Structurally, the piece follows a fast–slow–fast arc:
The Outer Sections: Filled with technical vigor and rhythmic energy, capturing the mechanical power and excitement of takeoff and flight. These sections rely on aggressive accents, dramatic dynamic surges and a thrilling, full-ensemble momentum.
The Middle Section: Provides a stark contrast of celestial calm. Featuring high-tessitura violin lines, this section evokes the serene, weightless experience of gliding above the clouds.
Pedagogical Flexibility: Lone Eagle is uniquely designed to serve dual purposes. It can be performed as a standalone Grade 4 work for advanced ensembles, or utilized as an inclusive, large-scale massed festival piece. The score includes fully integrated Grade 2.5 and Grade 1 parts. These optional parts are carefully crafted to provide accessible technical challenges while allowing younger students to experience the depth, thrill, and sonic power of a massive orchestral sound alongside advanced peers.
Massed Festival Layering and Balance: Students will experience the unique thrill of multi-tier collaboration, learning how to listen across a massive, multi-level ensemble and adapt their balance so that foundational and advanced parts blend into a unified orchestral sound.
Kinetic Drive and Rhythmic Accents: A powerful tool for developing rhythmic stability and collective drive, challenging your advanced players to maintain a relentless, forward-moving pulse through sudden dynamic surges and aggressive accents.
Shifting Tessitura and High-Register Control: Ideal for refining shifting accuracy and left-hand confidence in your upper strings, utilizing high-tessitura violin lines in the serene middle section to teach breath-like bow control and sustained, celestial intonation.
